A subject that in many ways I feel has become almost taboo to speak on in public venues, and even in close circles.
Mention anger in certain company and you will likely find yourself “Loved, Lighted, and Blessed” to a degree you will feel like you’ve been mistaken for the Blessed Mother herself. ((smiles))
I adore the Blessed Mother and yet apparently I have a long way to go to Sainthood for all of that Blessing others have gifted me with to attempt to diffuse my anger at times, well, it just didn’t work.
It has also been recommended to me a million and one times that I just ‘let it go’ and while I agree 100% percent with the letting it go and I strongly advocate Release Work in self-healing, to let something go you first must have some idea of what that something is.
Hence, I’ve had to learn to embrace my anger and listen to that which it was speaking to me to then be able to master and redirect this emotion/energy of anger just as I do with all emotions/energies if I find them manifesting in an undesirable form.
The first step to learning to utilize your anger, or any energy for that matter, is acknowledging that it really does exist.
The second step is not judging the emotion/energy as bad or harmful for it is simply something you are feeling at the moment and does not necessarily identify who you truly are.
No energy or emotion is bad or harmful in and of itself, these energies that comprise the emotional scale are merely tools, and there is nothing to fear in utilizing these tools we were gifted with for navigating our journeys within this human experience.
****************************************************************
We currently live in societies that I feel have made it quite unpopular to express “undesirable” emotions in a healthy manner and we have been encouraged to put a shiny veneer on everything and anything, including ourselves, and to not allow anything deemed ugly in some manner to be displayed for the view of others.
Some might argue that I am incorrect in my statement citing the premise that we view lot’s of emotion daily on news reels, tabloid venues, and reality-based TV shows and yes!, we do see lot’s of something in those arena’s yet in many cases it is not what I would call healthy emotional expression.
Anger, is an emotion, it is not an action.
Anger is an energy and actions come forth from one applying their Will to an energy.
Anger is one of many energies categorized as emotion and energies are neither good nor bad, they just ARE, until they are utilized by one’s Will and directed for manifestation therefore any energy can be utilized in any manner.
Energy-workers understand this quite well and simply term it transmuting energies and the first step in transmuting energies is to first drop the label off an energy and just feel the vibration.
Energies have many different levels of mass and the more compacted the mass, the denser an energy feels to the human system, hence the labels of low and high vibration/energies.
Anger just happens to be a more dense energy and can pack a real punch to someone that is not accustomed to working energies or does not find the intensity appealing, and yet the quantity of energy contained within anger if utilized in the proper manner, can deliver huge results for beneficial purposes.
By acknowledging the presence of one’s anger and by not denying the existence of this energy (which in effect will only repress it and will not make it go away) you can take steps to utilize your anger as the fuel for meaningful purposes and lessen the possibility of your anger having negative ramifications for yourself and/or others.
*****************************************************************
In astrology anger falls under the jurisdiction of Mars but Mars also represents action, courage, enthusiasm, initiative and passion.
Mars is representative of one energy/vibration, even if it does carry many different keywords that denote it’s directed form and what you do with your Mars energy, and how you manifest it, is entirely your choice.
If you feel your Mars is dysfunctional and are ready to work with your Mars, instead of allowing Mars to work you, you can learn quite quickly how to channel the energy of Mars into another manifested form if you desire to do so.
By looking at the sign and house that Mars takes residence within in your natal chart, and the aspects made to other planets/points, you can come to a better understanding of where Mars energy is a constant influence in your life. Consideration should also be applied to where Mars transits your chart for wherever he travels in your chart, by houses and signs and the aspects made by transit to other natal placements, will be a temporary area of focus for your Mars energy.
The best way to come to understand Mars and to learn to transmute Mars energies for your benefit is to examine your Mars placement ( the house and sign in which Mars resides) along with noting any aspects Mars makes to other planets points.
By separating the function of your Mars in your chart into beneficial and challenging functions, as symbolized by the aspects formed such as sextiles being of benefit and squares being of challenge, you shall then have a map to use to begin to channel your challenging Mars energies into your beneficial Mars areas hence boosting those area’s in your life and becoming an effective energy worker in command of your Mars based emotions/energy/actions.
*********************************************************************
I shall give an example of this process, by using my own Mars as example:
Mars takes residence in Sagittarius within my 6th house and makes a harmonious aspect, a quintile, to my Jupiter-Mercury conjunction in Libra.
My Mars forms squares to my Sun, Pluto, North Node and Midheaven while opposing my Moon.
The goal with these placements is to channel the energy of the challenging aspects into the more favorable ones and hence by doing so shift/transmute “negative” expressions to “positives”. This requires taking actions represented by the favorable aspects when the challenging aspects are triggered and live-wires.
Here’s an example of how I work this with my placements:
Mars in Sagittarius represents initiating energies of passion, courage, enthusiasm etc. available for long journeys, higher education, philosophy and spiritual exploration/aspirations and with Mars in the 6th house will readily be expressed be through my daily routines of duty, service, health, pets and with co-workers. When my Mars is operating in a dysfunctional capacity this becomes apparent to me for I become unsatisfied or agitated with one or more of these components in my life and/or I develop health issues due to Mars self-repression.
Using one challenging aspect in my chart for an example of shifting/transmuting energies:
I carry a natal Mars square Pluto and this aspect has the possibility of manifesting as abuse, often as physical violence, either directed from one’s self towards another or inflicted upon one’s self by another. This aspect did manifest as abuse received from others for much of my life until I learned how to channel this energy I carry into my harmonious Mars functions. The way I went about doing this transmutation was by utilizing my experiences that came of the misaligned energy(abuse) and accessed my Mars quintile Jupiter-Mercury conjunction to relate these experiences into forms that were more positive for myself and others.
Jupiter- Mercury conjunction provides a clear capacity for understanding knowledge and an ability to communicate said knowledge to others with ease while inciting a desire to expand one’s understanding of relational situations/subjects. My quintile from Mars to Jupiter-Mercury allows me to diffuse the intensity of my Mars experiences via communicating what I have learned within these experiences with others.
In simple application: When I had enough of being the recipient of abuse (mars/pluto dysfunction) I took back the power of that square and owned it, not by flipping it up and becoming an abuser to others, but by utilizing my strong suit in the Quintile and seeking a greater understanding of the dynamics of my experiences and then sharing the knowledge I acquired with others through my writing and counsel.
I have found that when I channel my challenges of Mars in this manner I achieve my own Saving Grace by neutralizing my energy that previously malfunctioned and attracted abusive patterns and situations.
************************************
If you have a lot of challenging aspects in your chart you may feel as if it is going to be a lot of work to channel those energies in a healthier manner and I will not tell you that it is not work, for it absolutely is. Yet if you have tried most everything you can think of and are still having a hard time of it learning to maximize your beneficial Mars functions can produce very favorable results.
I’d also like to mention that even if you have little astrology knowledge or interest that when dealing with anger the simplest way to diffuse it is to get physical through a positive outlet. Any form of strenuous physical exercise/expression such as weight training, dance, football etc. all work fabulously in a pinch.
I personally favor loud, heavy bass music and dancing, and also, demolition! If you have something that needs to be razed, or if not, surely a neighbor or friend does, grab a sledgehammer and have at! With each swing, put all of that anger energy into it and know you are doing something good that needs to be done.
Mars is a very necessary component of our lives for it fuels us to action and drives us to live with verve and passion. When Mars is well-functioning we are afforded with more than enough energy to achieve our initiatives so here’s to embracing your Martian side in positive ways! ~Kachina Houska

Technique for transmuting undesired emotions/energy: Simple Technique for Releasing and Transmuting Energies.
Hey Kachina – Another great post! You definitely have a good grasp of how to utilize that powerful Mars energy for its highest expression. As I mentioned in my last comment, I also have Mars (retrograde in Gemini in the 9th), square Pluto (in Virgo in the 12th), and like you, that suppressive “bullying” energy has generally been directed at me OR witnessed by me; I’m not a bully, nor am I passive aggressive (YUCK!) The only other major planetary aspect to my Mars is a trine to my Aquarius Moon in the 5th. Coincidentally, I also have Jupiter conjunct Mercury (conjunct Neptune) all in Scorpio.
You were so right about using those positive Mars aspects; any kind of artistic expression is very healing for me. I’ve always danced, and later in life discovered the joys of painting. Working with kids has also provided a positive outlet. With Mars in Gemini, any kind of physical activity (walking in particular) really helps to keep me balanced.
“We currently live in societies that I feel have made it quite unpopular to express “undesirable” emotions in a healthy manner.”
How true! And who knows this better than someone with Mars square Pluto (especially when aided by that lovely quintile). I think this tendency on the part of society can also make it far easier to gloss over the truth, and to ignore those unpleasantries that might legitimately warrant our attention.
The funny thing about that Mars/Pluto square, is that once I get fired up, even it can be very productive. When Saturn was conjunct my 12th house Pluto, (and triggering the square to 9th house Mars), I witnessed some pretty egregious offenses committed by the elderly care facility that housed my ailing mother – talk about an abuse of power. When numerous attempts at diplomacy failed, I was forced to go into advocacy mode to help shed light on the corruption and attempt to reform it. It helps that my 12th house Pluto is sextile and in mutual reception with my Mercury. I agree with what you said about transmuting Mars energies into something beneficial. Sometimes anger over an injustice can spur us on towards positive action.
So even that awful Pluto/Mars square has some positive potential. Retrograde Mars always picks up on the underlying energy in situations, and the trick for me has been in not allowing myself to get drawn in or sidetracked by ego concerns, and to choose my battles wisely (I think Robert over at Aquarius Papers has the best understanding of retrograde Mars I’ve ever read.) Once I allow that to happen, that energy can work together for the highest good.
I love your insights and appreciate you sharing your truth. Thanks Kachina!

I’m glad you weighed in on this!
If you don’t own these energies, especially one’s as power packed as Mars-Pluto, they will ‘own’ you. Life with aspects such as Mars-Pluto operating in a dysfunctional form is miserable, no doubt about it.
I agree completely with your sentiments of the societal tendency to gloss over the truth and ignore unpleasantries. My personal view of this is simple; most don’t want to see it for if they do then they may just have to admit their individual contribution(s) to said issue. I do understand that completely. It really doesn’t feel good at all to look at a HUGE issue and have to honestly admit to having added to it in some way, no matter how minor. Yet here we are on a co-creative plane and while we are in this form no one is really exempt, are they? 🙂
And yes! I too am learning how productive that Mars-Pluto square can be now that I have stopped being scared of it..after all it is just energy and we are born with it for a reason, and I don’t believe that G-d makes mistakes!
So nice to have other Mars-Pluto gals to share with..like yourself!..for frankly I have never met women without this aspect that were truly able to understand(and that is likely a good thing..for the negative manifestations I would wish for NO ONE) the bizzaro manifestations that occur in our lives as we are learning to understand what this combination means and to achieve a higher function with it.
